It wasn't a happy sight for our old gaffer Paul Jewell must
wonder what he's got himself into. He gave debuts
to Danny Mills, Laurent Robert, Hossam Ghaly, Emanuel
Villa and, as skipper, Robbie Savage.
But from the off, Derby couldn't keep hold of the
ball, it was painful to watch sometimes. On the flip
side, even with our possession and dominance we just
couldn't find that goal.
Wilson Palacios got his international clearance through
and replaced Ryan Taylor in the starting line up.
Emmerson Boyce came in for the suspended Paul Scharner.
Luis Antonio had his first effort in the first minute
but his shot was blocked. His second shot didn't do
much better giving Price in the Derby nets an easy
save.
Superb link up play from Mario Melchiot and Antonio
Valencia set up Marcus Bent inside the area but he
disappointingly shoots over the bar. Bent then did
have the ball in the back of the net, but the assistant
referee's flag is up for off side against Emile Heskey.
Just a minute from half time Valencia again should
have put us one up, but manages to shoot wide from
8 yards after Bent's shot was blocked on the line.
The Ecuadorian holds his head in his hands knowing
we should have gone in leading.
The second half starts with the same tempo, Latics
dominating and looking for the opening goal. Denny
Landzaat had the first chance of the half but his
free kick went well over the bar.
Mario Melchiot and Marcus Bent both send shots high
and wide before Claude Davis deservedly and stupidly
collects his second yellow and off he went.
Heskey and substitute Jason Koumas were tearing into
the Derby defense but couldn't find that killer goal.
Steve Bruce decided to take off the tiring Denny Landzaat
and throw on another striker, Antoine Sibierski.
Seconds after coming on a long pass from Bramble
found Marcus Bent's head and he squared the ball across
for the Frenchman to spank home his fourth of the
season with a terrific strike from 20 yards.
Latics recorded their first away win of the season,
but know they should have been out of sight in the
first half. A better team could have punished us for
that. Lots of shooting practice is needed in training
this week.
