Heskey was taken off in the 8th minute of this game and
for the next 60 minutes the team showed how much he
gives to the performances. If it had been another
team playing us, we could have been on the end of
a huge thrashing, but luckily it was Fulham.
Even the goal they did score was off the back off
a Rob Styles blunder. The Hampshire Official was banned
for a weekend for giving a non-existent penalty to
Chelsea.
He showed that form with a decision to give Fulham
a throwing when it quite obviously came off Konchesky.
Styles then went against the linesman as he gestured
for a Wigan throw.
All credit to Fulham, who then took the throw, banged
it up field where Scharner was torn to bits by Kamara
and Dempsey managed to sneak the ball under the advancing
Kirkland.
This looked at the time like it was a class goal
and that Fulham were going to go on and batter us.
What actually ensued was the Cottagers wasting chance
after chance and looking like their forwards couldn't
kick straight. This started to make me think that
their goal was actually a fluke and they normally
play like this.
The rest of the first half petered out without any
major incidents. The start of the second half was
the same, until Hutchings brought on Skoko. This triggered
us to actually play the ball on the ground.
Three minutes after coming on, Rob Styles decides
Skoko should be for nowt. 15 minutes later we had
our breakthrough. Melchiot was brought down in the
box by Bouazza and Jason Koumas converted from the
penalty spot. From a game that we could have been
losing, Scharner had the golden chance to win the
game.
The Austrian was 5 yards out with just the keeper
to beat, but he fluffed his shot straight at Niemi
and the Fulham stopper saved on the line. All in all
we could have soundly lost this game, but in the end
should have won.
