Latics were denied any points as Mark Clattenberg and his
assistants got two big decisions wrong. Firstly, ruling
Marcus Bent's goal offside when he clearly wasn't.
Secondly giving Julius Aghahowa offside when through
on goal, after the Nigerian International had run
from being 3 yards on side.
The Match started off very ominously for Wigan as
Liverpool very quickly won a free kick just outside
the box. Steve Gerrard spanked the free kick that
forced Kirkland into a full stretch save.
As the match went on though, it was Latics that made
most of the better chances. Torres and Kuyt were kept
very quiet by a magnificent Wigan defence and Gerrard
wasn't allowed to get into his stride, Michael Brown
winning everything in the middle of the park.
Aghahowa had a decent penalty shout waved away in
the first half, and then was mysteriously given off
side when he was clean through on goal. The Nigerian
had outrun two defenders to latch o t o the ball and
must have been 3 yards on side.
In the second half Marcus Bent did manage to find
the net, but this was chalked off wrongly for off
side. Koumas was exceptional in the second half, setting
up chances for substitute Ryan Taylor, Aghahowa, Scharner
and Bent, but nothing seemed to be going our way.
In the 75th minute Yossi Benayoun was very fortunate
to get a deflected goal after some neat play. Whilst
at the other end Ryan Taylor steered Marcus Bent's
cross just wide of the post.
This triggered some unsavoury behaviour in the home
end, as so called 'Liverpool fans' who had obtained
tickets for the home stand decided to throw abuse
at the Wigan fans around them. Some thought it was
clever to throw a few punches whilst they were being
escorted out of the ground, surrounded (protected)
by police and stewards. I hope they feel proud of
themselves.
In the dying seconds though, Wigan's best chance
came with Koumas attacking down the left wing; he
tore the Liverpool defence apart and delivered the
perfect cross for Aghahowa to net. Somehow the net
didn't bulge as the Nigerian sent his header wide
from seven yards, instead of into the open goal.
Anyway we have an easy away trip at Old Trafford
next week where we can make up for not getting anything
out of this game.
