The expectations for this game were high for Latics to get
their season back on track with this match against
Portsmouth. I don’t think anyone expected what they
saw though.
The commercial department pulled out a couple of
spectator incentives for this game with the ‘Friends
For A Fiver’ and ‘Ladies Day’. But someone forgot
to tell the team, as if this was the first time some
had come to watch, it’ll probably be their last.
The match actually started off with Paul Scharner
shaving the woodwork, but unfortunately that was the
last of the action for Wigan. To be fair Portsmouth
didn’t exactly set the game alight either.
It was only in the 81st minute that anything resembling
effort took place and that was by Pompey who were
gifted a goal by the Wigan Midfield. The second goal
followed 5 minutes later when Benjani was given far
too much room.
Credit has to be given to the back four, as they
had to defend without any help from the totally uninterested
midfield. Landzaat seemed the only one who could be
bothered shoeing any signs of playing football.
The front two, Bent and Aghahowa I think their called,
might as well not have been there at all.
One thing is for sure, Hutchings is going to have
to get some belief in this team, and do it quick.
Birmingham away is next and we can't afford to drop
points against them.
